Guide for Responsible Production and Trade
Back to Toolkit Overview

The Farm Development Programme is working on a guide which will help projects understand the commitments needed to ensure responsible fibre production and trade to deliver organic cotton which delivers integrity and fair returns to farmers.  The tool will also help brands and buyers understand what they need to look for and require of their suppliers.  The hope is to ensure a more consistent production for organic cotton in the long run and add to this tool elements to calculate a sustainable baseline price for organic cotton.

The Guide for Responsible Fibre Production and Trade aims to:
  1. Provide Guidance to Producers, Traders, and Service Providers involved in organic cotton fibre production on the different best practices available and to help select the best options
  2. Helps Producers, Traders, and Service Providers to producer in the best possible way and in a fully verifiable and transparent manner by supporting the use of available approaches and tools
  3. Guides Producers, Traders, and Service Providers in measuring the additional impacts from responsible organic cotton production, such as fair returns to producers.
  4. Be a simple education tool to help fibre buyers understand the benefits and costs of Responsible Fibre Production and in turn for them to help consumers understand the additional costs and benefits of responsible organic fibre production.
  5. Provide a summary of Rights, Responsibilities, and Obligations (legal and moral) of all parties engaged in Fibre Production
  6. Provide a verifiable, sustainable, and if necessary enforceable baseline for Responsible Fibre Production and Trade.
While we anticipate this guide providing detailed guidance on how to organise sustainable production to be out very soon, Organic Exchange currently provides the following resources on Responsible Production and Trade. For additional information contact us at info@organicexchange.org
